"Best show done by this group"

This production was amazing. I can't even begin to describe how much I enjoyed it. The music, the casting, the costumes, the sets...fantastic. I give this show a forever standing 'O'.

"Everything a Sullivan comedic operetta should be—delightful!"

Without much in the way of a theatrical model to follow, director Barbara Murray and choreographer Shannon Self shaped this little-performed operetta with a skillful hand. There are a few rough edges, but the Lyric Theatre Company has done well. Alexandra Kendall (coloratura soprano), making her debut as the Sultana "Rose in Bloom," plays her character with feeling and charm, and nails the complexity of "Neath my lattice" with power, beauty, precision, and diction. Mark Blattel (comic baritone) sings his way through the part of Hassan in good comedic fashion. Indre Viskontas (mezzo-soprano) as Heart's Desire commands the stage effortlessly and her musicality is dead on. Dan Galpin (tenor), in his role as Yussuf the storyteller, is energetic, precise in song, and adhesive to the action. Lisa Lutkenhouse Lowe’s exotic costume design and Greg Anderson’s nuance from the orchestra and chorus are the icing on this delightful, must-see production. Collapse

I am proud to be the producer of Ragtime and want to offer kudos to the entire cast, crew & staff who have made audiences jump to their feet with standing ovations during each performance! It's a lovely show which is beautifully staged and directed. There is great heart and emotion as the story unfolds and is impeccably acted, sung and danced by each cast and ensemble member. Both the cast & orchestra present the beautiful libretto and score of this musical in the finest possible way. It is obvious by looking at the technical aspects of the show that the over 150 members of the cast and crew working on this show did so with great passion and dedication and that they are both talented and capable at what they do. It is obvious that they have spent much time to create a wonderful theatrical experience for audience members! Again kudos to all! If you have not seen Ragtime yet, buy your tickets soon as many of the performances scheduled are already sold out with waiting lists. Collapse

Sure, the music is amazing, the sets are great, the staging is lovely and this piece shows us what it is of which Sullivan is capable without Gilbert. But much more important than that is that they've shown, once and for all, that the myth of the standard "opera singer" appearance was left firmly in the 20th century. Yep, amazing women in harem outfits singing amazingly. Come for the harem outfit, stay for the (bizarre, ridiculous, very Gilbert-esque) plot. Collapse

"Great Show!!"

This is a really funny show with great headliner performances. The costumes are gorgeous, the comedy is well timed, and the voices are strong. Very worth your time.

Perhaps I'm coming from a rather jaded place, having seen "Ragtime" on the Broadway stage. But while I was very excited to see this show, I am sad to report that I was more than a little disappointed. I honestly felt that nearly all of the principle characters were miscast. I have seen many wonderful productions that C. Michael has directed, and I know he's been in a lead or involved as an actor in several, so it was surprising that he struggled with his lines and his delivery throughout. Some of the vocals were strong, but they were NOT the "belters" that were such a necessary element in RAGTIME. While the role of Houdini was minor, I was actually pleased with the performance of Mischa Stephens. Perhaps it's unfair to compare this production to the B'Way show, but having seen many excellent productions in the bay area, many of them by this same company, I am sorry to report that this is one I could have "missed" without regret. Although, this musical was 3 hours long, it kept me on the edge of my seat from the very beginning. The set was beautiful, really big. The amazing cast and their talent really brought the house down, The costumes, everything was really well done for a community show. I am trying to go see this production again, but it seems to be sold out. What my fav things in the production, was the opening, there was just so much people but they were all amazing, the music was breathtaking, the orchestra was flawless. I loved Atlantic City, henry ford, and ready rag song. The song that ended act 1 made me cry sooooo much, Paula Warren did such an amazing job, and was believable. Everything about this show was much better then the others i have seen, Saratoga has really made a impact on the shows i see there now. Collapse
